Laser Gum Reduction: Your Step-by-Step Guide

Thinking about laser gum reduction to eliminate a gummy smile? The treatment can enhance the appearance of your smile without any scalpels. Read on to learn more about each step of the process.

Laser gum reduction is an in-office procedure that corrects a gummy smile without using scalpels. If you’re considering laser gum reduction for a gummy smile, you might wonder about the process and how it can help you achieve your picture-perfect smile.

Read on as Nicole Thompson, DMD, and her team here at Lovely Smiles Orthodontics in Richmond share a step-by-step guide for what you can expect before and after your laser gum reduction.

Step one: Schedule your initial consultation

During this appointment, you discuss your goals, concerns, and expectations regarding gum reduction with Dr. Thompson. She then assesses your oral health, examines your gum line, and determines if laser gum reduction is a suitable solution.

If laser gum reduction is right for you, Dr. Thompson reviews everything you need to know to prepare for (and recover from) laser therapy.

Step two: Prepare for your laser gum reduction

Before the laser gum reduction procedure, Dr. Thompson uses an antibacterial rinse to clean your teeth and gums. This helps to create a sterile environment and minimizes the risk of infection during and after your treatment. You may also discuss pre-operative instructions, such as avoiding certain medications or adjusting your oral care routine.

Step three: Discuss anesthesia options

Most people tolerate laser gum reduction quite well since the lasers are so well-controlled that they only impact the targeted area. In fact, laser therapies are often less painful than surgical gum reduction since no cutting or sutures are required.

Prior to the process, Dr. Thompson uses a specially mixed topical anesthesia which usually results in a pain-free procedure. However, in some rare cases, Dr. Thompson may administer local anesthesia for additional comfort. If you’d like to discuss your options, let us know. Our team is happy to discuss your anesthesia options with you and address any concerns you may have.

Step four: Sit back while the laser removes excess gum tissue

The laser gum reduction procedure involves using a specialized dental laser to precisely and gently remove excess gum tissue. Laser therapy is incredibly precise and only affects the targeted tissue. Not only does the laser remove excess tissue, but it simultaneously cauterizes the tissue, which then minimizes bleeding and promotes faster healing.

Step five: Sculpt the gum tissue

While removing the excess tissue, Dr. Thompson sculpts the gumline to achieve a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing appearance. This may involve contouring the gum tissue around specific teeth or adjusting the overall shape of your gums. Again, because the laser vaporizes the tissue, there’s no need for stitches. The goal is to create a harmonious balance between your teeth and gums.

Step six: Follow your aftercare instructions

Following the laser gum reduction procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort or swelling.

Our team provides specific aftercare instructions, which may include recommendations for pain management, dietary restrictions (such as following a soft food diet while your gums heal), and modified oral hygiene practices. Most patients can resume regular activities shortly after the procedure.

Step seven: Follow-up with our team

Your journey doesn't end with the procedure itself. Follow-up appointments here at Lovely Smiles Orthodontics allow Dr. Thompson and our team to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns you may have.
